Sometimes Facebook makes you think…

I saw this today on Facebook and was touched.  Sometimes, when we take a moment to breathe, or find the calm, we are reminded of the beautiful things that are possible from humanity: Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was...

Understanding Permissive Language

Permissive Language and Changing The Negative Focus How often do we find ourselves using phrases like: "I'll try", and "If I do this then…"? Without even knowing that we are doing it, we use negative or restrictive phrases every day. These types of words or word...

The Evolution of Pretty vs Beautiful: a Narrative Idea

In January of 2012 I was working with a young girl with anorexia.  During one of our sessions, she discussed the difference between being pretty and being beautiful.  This led to a blog in which I posted a link to a YouTube video that was done by Dove...

Eleven Rights for Children of Divorced Parents

It’s not uncommon in my practice that I provide adolescent therapy to children whose parents are divorced.  Often times the focus of our sessions are on how to effectively maintain relationships with both parents while at the same time staying clear of the...

Pretty vs Beautiful: How we are taught to see ourselves

About a month ago I was asked about the difference between pretty and beautiful. This was something that I had never really thought about before, but I struck at the complexity of this simple question. As I began to think about it, I realized that this is the question...

How to Guide: Capturing Your Dreams

Last week, I was doing a session of EMDR with a woman who had been through a sexual assault.  At the beginning of each session, I asked her if she had any new thoughts, insights, or dreams.  At those last words, she looked at me and said yes she had a dream,...
