How Often Should I Go To Therapy?

therapy and consultingIn the first session of therapy, the client is asked what brought him/her to therapy and to identify the goals and outcomes that the client wishes to achieve from therapy. From the information provided, the therapist will recommend a weekly schedule that takes into account the complexity of the issues, problems, and impasses that the client is facing. The therapist may ask that the client attend from 3 sessions a week to once weekly sessions. The recommendation for sessions is generally based upon the extent to which a client’s daily life is being impaired by symptoms of a condition and/or how quickly a client wishes to see change in his/her life.

Often, a client expresses a lack of availability to commit to frequent sessions and/or a lack of the finances needed to pay for the sessions. A client who cites a busy schedule that cannot accommodate the recommended number of weekly sessions is reminded that the greater the span in between sessions, the longer it will take to meaningfully tackle presenting issues. For those clients who do not have the funds to afford sessions, some therapists offer a sliding fee scale, which takes into account a client’s current and anticipated financial standing when determining a fair price for sessions. Whether you cite a lack of time and/or finances to commit to the recommended schedule, many therapists will advise no less than twice monthly sessions. Therapy requires a concentrated effort on a consistent basis to realize the fullest benefits from the therapeutic relationship. Once monthly sessions tend to hinder a client’s progress and prolong the length of time spent in therapy.
